What do I need to get car insurance if i don't use my car? will i be fined for that? Massachusetts?

Hi, my policy expired and I can't afford to drive anymore. i am justing using public transportation and I don't need to use it right now. Someone told me that I can't just let it sit in my driveway uninsured, or I may have to return the license plate. I don't know if this is true, it sounds absurd. I live in Massachusetts. if so, how much is the fine?
